I’m finding myself increasingly frustrated with my Android device. Not only does it feel “blah” and bland, but the software just feels sluggish and inconsistent. It’s as if I need to re-learn how to use the device with each app.

I’ll admit, there were a few times where I thought to myself, “This is stupid. Why am I even doing this? A perfectly good iPhone is just sitting there and not being used.” But I held back for the sake of my experiment. Maybe I just need to get used to the device. We’ll see, I suppose.

I’ve also found out that my experiment will have to be cut short - I’ll have do demo some Apple products for my job on Tuesday. Which means my iPhone will be required.

Even with an extra day thrown in there… will I give up and pick up that iDevice? I’ll let you know how it does.

I’ve gone through over 24 hours of using Android only and not touching my iPhone. There were a few times I caught myself walking into the next room where my iPhone is docked, picking it up, then stopping myself from operating it. Other times, I walk past, feeling sad and sorry that I’m unable to use it.

I spent my first few hours with Android customizing the thing - custom launcher, changing icon images, tweaking widgets, etc. I’m quite proud of what I came up with. But after that was done, I found myself underwhelmed. What now? 

I started messing around with my apps — really digging deep and comparing them to their iPhone counterparts. 

Facebook for Android is more annoying than it is on the iPhone (if you can believe that!). Google Voice integration is superb - very jealous that iPhone can’t work that way. Google Reader app is probably the best Google Reader app out there - I love the swiping between articles. 

Other than that, I’ve noticed bits of delay when swiping or scrolling. I didn’t see much of that on iPhone. Text blurred when scrolling, making the UI feel unpolished although it was probably the fault of the Droid 4’s pentile display.

And battery - ugh! I felt like I had to charge this thing constantly! 

Even though it’s been 24 hours, I feel like I haven’t really dug deep enough and I hope more insights into the world of Android in the days to come. 

Paul Miller is quite an inspiring guy. Not only is he Senior Editor for The Verge, but he has also decided to quit the internet for an entire year. Granted, I am not that brave (though the experiment does sound intriguing) but it has inspired me to try an experiment of my own.

The iPhone has been the only smartphone that I’ve owned for personal use. Yeah, I have an Android for work, but it’s certainly not my main phone. I really only mess around with it here and there. Lately, I’ve been considering an Android. The open-ness of the platform has really intrigued me lately, especially in this so-called post-PC era.

So, I’ve decided to put away my iPhone for a week and rely solely on my Android. Sure, I’d prefer the Galaxy Nexus (stock Android, please!), but I’ll have to settle for my Motorola Droid 4. 

I hope to gain some deeper insight on Android vs. iOS by doing this and ultimately figure out if I could live without iOS.
